A lot has been happening the past few weeks. I started a new job, I bought a house, and I’ve taken on new responsibilities and burdens. And during that time, I’ve found my life filled with so many things that are devoid of deeper meaning, and so I’ve become unbalanced.
Now is the time to get back into balance.
I spent last night and this morning reading some Christian blogs, and there is one thought that comes to mind above all others: It is good to be reminded that life is more than a series of events. Life is about relationships and small details and wonder and mystery and things that can be held in the mind but not explained with words. In short, life is about the deeper scenery.
Deeper scenery shows up when you think about your best friend. If you’re married, it shows up when you think about your spouse. It shows up when you stand at the top of a mountain, beholding a beautiful view, or when you simply see a beautiful sunset in the car on your way home. It even shows up when you look closely at a flower and how it is made, and marvel at the detail of design of something that is so fleeting.
This deeper scenery is the tapestry on which our lives are painted, the pages on which our stories are written. And if the background is so magnificent and wonderful, do you now begin to understand how much more wonderful is the foreground? Each one of us has an important role to play. The consequences (both good and bad) of our actions can have affects on the deeper scenery that will only be fully understood years later.
My challenge to myself is to begin walking more deliberately through my part in the story, trusting and listening to God to guide me through the part he has written for me. Because that is the only way to get back into balance.
